Malong

“Malongs (pronounced mah-long) are usually used by ethnic groups in the southern part of Mindanao, Philippines, which is where my grandmother lived.

I chose this item as it is the only object that keeps me safe. For as long as I can remember, I have used this garment as a blanket (would choose this over a normal blanket/duvet). The phrase "safety blanket" usually refers to a cover that does not burn easily and is used to throw on an area that is on fire/to stop the flame from spreading. It could also refer to a piece of fabric keeping people warm in emergency situations or a blanket that is familiar to one. To me, it is the latter. I have four malongs in total, all were gifted/given to me by my grandmother who passed away in February 2024. All my malongs hold immense value to me but since my grandmother's passing, it's become invaluable, because although I could probably purchase a new one, nothing compares to a gift from someone who has already passed.”
