Hui Fan: Folding Fan & Round Fan
From: Lily

“The fan is considered a symbolic icon of traditional Chinese culture. There are many types of fans, but the most esteemed are the folding fan and the round fan. By the Ming Dynasty, the folding fan became a favorite pastime for literati, revered as a graceful item hidden in the sleeve.

The folding fan represents the Hui fan, depicting the majestic Huang Mountains and the noble Welcome Pine on its small silk surface.

The round fan , on the other hand, is a lacquer fan. Its crafting technique involves dripping refined lacquer into water, swirling to create patterns, allowing pigments to naturally disperse on the water's surface. Subsequently, the fan is submerged to create the ripple effect, resulting in patterns that exude a profound sense of Chinese aesthetic beauty.

The round lacquer fan made from Xuan paper, which I personally handcrafted, holds great significance as a memento of this trip.”
